LoveYatri 2018 screenshort
Salman "Bhai" Khan is known to give a break to kids of his friends or co-stars. That changes with Loveyatri in which Khan presents his brother-in-law Aayush Sharma who plays a garba instructor named Susu. A terribly named hero is the least of the film's worries.
This is a "journey of love" so insipid with a couple so lifeless that it's better to hear Falguni Pathak sing "Pari Hai" on a loop than sit through this rich girl-meets-middle class boy saga.
Susu, short for Sushrut, is a young man from Vadodara with no ambition because running a garba school in Gujarat is not a career option. Manisha aka Michelle (Warina Hussain) is a London-based class topper who is ambitious and visiting her extended family during Navratri. It's love on the first day and at first sight for Susu.
Michelle doesn't take long to fall for him, although it's hard to see what draws her to Susu for Sharma is far from an adept dancer and is pokerfaced for most of the running time. On a few occasions, he flashes a toothy smile.
Better off are his two friends: Negative (Pratik Gandhi) and Rocket (Sajeel Parakh). The former is a cynic, always dropping brutally honest, discouraging remarks about how mismatched the pairing is; the latter is more supportive but has no good advice. Leaving the two actors from the London leg of Love Yatri is the biggest disservice because it means no more laughs and only more of Sharma and Hussain.
Instead, the audience gets Susu's mama (Ram Kapoor) aka his motivational speaker and a Navratri singer who never sings. Kapoor gets to deliver a rousing speech in Hindi in a London pub where he asks his nephew to look at the three Khans (Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman) for romantic inspiration. It's also the only reference to Bhai in the film who also gives some screen time to his younger siblings.
The thorn in Loveyatri is but of course the disapproving dad (Ronit Roy) who runs a laundry empire named Lord of the Rinse, one of the few memorable jokes in an otherwise forgettable film. Roy gets to be vindictive in two unintentionally hilarious scenes set around a Ferris wheel.
It's a stretch to call Love Yatri a love story centered around dance for the love is drab and the dancing unexciting with two newcomers struggling to pull off Vaibhavi Merchant's choreography. Niren Bhatt's story and screenplay fail to make the romance passionate or even compellingly rebellious. Meanwhile, Bhai's track record as a producer giving a platform to new acting talent continues to diminish.
Loveyatri, starring Aayush Sharma and Warina Hussain is an insipid and drab love story and is a forgettable film, says our movie review.
